Bird Watching Tour in Mongolia:
Mongolia is a vast country with diverse natural zones and landscapes that represen taiga through Gobi desert. Country is mostly steppe, but taiga forest in the north, high mountain in the west and grassland in the east and Gobi desert in the south. At 1.564.600 square kilometer area, 2.9 million people live in Mongolia. About 45% of entire population of the country lives in capital city Ulan Bator. Many of the of Mongolians still live with the way of nomadic lifestyle.
Up to date 476 species of birds have been recorded in Mongolia. During the birding tour it is possible to see around 200 species including Altai Snowcock, Relict Gull, Pallas’s Gull, Oriental Plover, Pallas’s Fish Eagle, Saxaul Sparrow, Swan Goose, Bar-headed Goose, Black-billed Capercaillie, Wallcreeper, Desert Wheatear, Asian Desert Warbler, Azure Tit, White-crowned Penduline Tit and Kozlov’s Accentor.
This fascinating tour give us an opportunity to birding in the most beautiful area of Mongolia and experience the way of nomadic herder’s life and culture as well as to enjoy the spectacular scenery of central and south Mongolia.

DAY 1: ULAANBAATAR
On arrival we transfer to the hotel and spend a little time getting organised before exploring the city: Gandan Monastery, Mongolia’s largest monastery and the centre of Buddhism. Here you will see the impressive Golden Buddha Statue of Migjid Janraisig. Given time, the group should visit the National History Museum with its fascinating exhibition of Genghis Khan. In the evening we have a briefing and group meal. (D)
DAY 2: TERELJ NATIONAL PARK/
An relaxing breakfast, we will meet the guide and then drive to Terelj National Park (70 km). Afternoon we will reach beautiful Terelj national park and visit a horseman family, experience the nomadic life and culture and horseriding. We will see Hazel Grouse, Pallas’s leaf Warbler, Yellow-browed Warbler, Three-toed Woodpecker, White-backed Woodpecker, Willow Tit, Wood Nuthatch, Olive-backed Pipit, Daurian Redstart and Daurian Jackdaw. Enjoy stone grilled real Mongolian BBQ for Dinner at tourist ger camp and overnight at the camp. (B,L,D)
DAY 3-4: BIRDING IN KHENTII MOUNTAIN/ GENGHIS KHAN STATUE
After breakfast, we will drive to Khan Khentii Mountain for Capercaille and other forest birds. On the way, we will visit Chinggis Khan Satatue. The statue is 40m high and is erected for in memory of the Great Khan. Also it is largest horse statue in the world.The Khentii Mountains are a mountain range in the Tov and Khentii Provinces in east north Mongolia. The chain overlaps the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area and includes Mongolia's sacred mountain, Burkhan Khaldun, which is associated with the origin of Genghis Khan. The range forms the watershed between the Arctic Ocean (via Lake Baikal) and the Pacific Ocean basins. Rivers originating in the range include the Onon, Kherlen, and Tuul. DAY 5: GUN GALUUT NATURE RESERVE
Today, we will drive to and full day birding in Gun Galuut Nature Reserve. There two different lakes and wetland in this place. We will see White-naped Crane, Demoiselle Crane, White-winged Scoter, Amur Falcon, Eurasian Hobby, Mongolian Lark, Small Snowfinch, Pied Wheatear, Black-necked Grebe, Blyth’s Pipit, Pallas’s Reed Bunting and Black-tailed Godwit, Spotted Redshank, Common Shelduck, Eurasian Curlew and Black Stork. Siberian Crane and Hooded Crane have been recorded at this site. Overnight in tent camping (B,L,D)
DAY 6: ULAANBAATAR
In the morning, we will drive to Ulaanbaatar and we will do further sightseeing tour including Natural History Museum or Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum. In the afternoon free time for shopping and relax. Have a farewell dinner. Overnight in hotel. (B)
DAY 7: BIRDING IN UB POND-TUUL RIVER-KHUSTAI NATIONAL PARK
Early in the morning, we will drive to the Ulaanbaatar pond (sewage pond) and Tuul River to see Azure Tit, White-crowned Penduline Tit, Yellow-breasted Bunting, Swan Goose, Grey Heron, Black-headed Gull, Long-tailed Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Black Kite, Brown Shrike and Paddyfield Warbler. During migration period we can catch up many other migrants at the same time. We will have a packed lunch. Later afternoon we will head to Khustai National Park (95 km from UB) and reach the park . We will see wild horse-Takhi in thier pasture. Wild horse Takhi having been reintroduced from Holland on international project. Dinner and overnight in tourist camp. (B,L,D)
DAY 8: UGII LAKE - ERDENEZUU MONASTERY
In the early morning we will drive to Ugii Lake which is one of the steppe lakes with reed beds. We will see Pallas’s Fish Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Bar-headed Goose and Swan Goose. On the way we will see Demoiselle Cranes, Horned Lark, Asian Short-toed Lark, and Mongolian Lark. Then we will drive to Karakorum. Arrive at Kharkhorin, ancient Capital of Great Mongolian Empire and Erdenezuu Monastery, The Monastery is oldest and the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. The monastery is surrounded by beautiful white walls with 108 stupas, founded by Avtai Sain Khan in 1586. Kharakhorum was established in the valley of the Orkhon River and was formerly a great capital city built in 1235, by Ogoodei Khan, Chingish khaan's third son. It was one of the stops along the Legendary Silk Road. It was the capital city of the Mongolian Great Empire until Khubilai Khaan, a grandson of Genghis Khaan, moved the capital to Beijing during the Yuan Dynasty. DAY 9: SANGYN DALAI LAKE-BAYANKHONGOR
We will drive to Sangiin Dalai Lake and continue to see birds. We can see Upland Buzzard, Cinereous Vulture, Horned Grebe, Blyth’s Pipit, Small Snowfinch, Eurasian Spoonbill, Black-throated Loon, Whooper Swan, Citrine Wagtail, Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler and Mongolian Gull. In the late evening we will arrive at Bayankhongor town and overnight hotel (B,L,D)
DAY 10-11: BAYANKHONGOR-KHOKH LAKE
Today we will drive to Khokh Lake which is located in the Khangai mountain range which stretches from central Mongolia to the western border. It runs in parallel along the northern side of the Altai. The mountainscape is gradually morphs into the steppes of eastern Mongolia. This geographical mixture creates a number of very interesting landscapes within manageable distance, and leads to a rich diversity in both flora and fauna. Here we will see White throated Bushchat, Asian Rosyfinch, Rufous backed Redstart, Altai snow Cock, Himalayan Accentor, White-winged Redstart. Overnights in tent camping (B,L,D)
DAY 12: BOON TSAGAAN NUUR
After breakfast, we will drive to Boon Tsagaan Nuur. It is one of the largest lakes in Lakes Valley. It is a famous place for Relit Gull. We will see Relict Gull, Pallas’s Gull, Pallas’s Fish Eagle, Caspian Tern, Swan Goose, Bar-headed Goose, Eurasian Spoonbill, Common Tern, White-winged Tern and Kentish Plover.Overnight at tent. We will put up our camp and go for bird watching around Boon Tsagaan Nuur. Oriental Plover and Greater Sand Plover have been reported on the way to the lake. We will see first Pallas’s Sandgrouses before we get in lake. Overnight in tent. (B,L,D)
DAY 13: OROG LAKE
In the morning we will drive to Orog Nuur where is the place to see Relict Gull. Upon arrival at Orog Lake, we will pitch up our tent camp and go for bird watching around Orog Nuur. We will see Great Egret, White-naped Crane, Demoiselle Crane, Mute Swan, Great Crested Grebe, Ferruginous Duck, Greylag Goose and Paddyfield Warbler, Rock Sparrow, Hoopoe, Desert Wheatear and Little Tern. DAY 14: IKH BOGD MOUNTAIN
We will drive to Ikh Bogd mountain which is part of the Gobi Altai mountain range. We will see Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush, Brown Accentor, Chukar Partridge, Brown Shrike, White-winged Snowfinch, Northern Wheatear, Pied Wheatear, Lammergeier and some other mountain species. Overnight in tent camping (B,L,D)
DAY 15: KHONGOR SAND DUNES
We will drive heading to Khongor Sand dunes where is Mongolian largest sand dunes 180 km long, up to 800m high, known as "the singing sands". It easy to climb up to highest Dune and can see amazing views of the Gobi, camel trekking, photography. And go for bird watching. Overnight at tourist GER camp. We will walk along the stream and look for Saxaul Sparrow in small scale of Saxaul forest. We will also see Steppe Grey Shrike, Isabelline Shrike and Upland Buzzard. Overnight in tourist ger camp (B,L,D)
DAY 16: YOLYN AM (LAMMERGEIER VALLEY)
We will drive to the Yoliin Am in Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. On the way we will stop at middle of Saxaul forest to see Asian Desert Warbler and Saxaul Sparrow. Overnight in tent camping (B,L,D)
DAY 17: FULL DAY BIRDING IN YOLYN AM
In the early morning, we will bird for Yolyn am valley to see Altai snowcock, Mongolian or Kozlov’s Accentor, Wallcreeper, Lammergeier, Himalayan Griffon, Beautiful Rosefinch, Black Redstart, Twite, Mongolian Finch, Crag Martin, White-winged Snowfinch, Alpine Accentor, Brown Accentor and Godlewski’s Bunting etc. Today we will dedicate full day birding in Yolyn Am. This place is also good for mammals such as Siberian Ibex, ground squirrel, Mongolian and Daurian Pikas. Overnight in tourist ger camp. (B,L,D)
DAY 18: ULAANBAATAR
Today we fly back to Ulaanbaatar to enjoy the capital and the comforts of our hotel. In the evening we will see fascinating performance of traditional folk songs, throat singing, and beautiful melody of horse-headed fiddle, ethnic dances and artistic contortion. (B,L,D)
